Pizza and GF diets

I love pizza..in the 10 years I have been Gluten Free it has never been easier than it is now to find good GF pizza at restaurants and pizza places – so venture out. In the SF Bay area Extreme Pizza, and Willow Street Pizza are two favorites.  Just remember it is thin crust most of the time and if you want extra toppings ASK, many places will add a little ground meat or chopped ham if you like..They often err on the side of less because it is not always easy to get assurance that the toppings are GF.

I use the www.triumphdining.com to find Restaurants and I rely on Yelp and other reviews to help me out.

Your favorite wine

Did you know there are over 50,000 varieties of wine? What is your favorite?          I only drank Cab and Riesling until I started my wine business and learned about the basic four types of wines; from there I began my journey into learning about wines and wine tasting….NOW, I’d love to help YOU learn about some limited artisan wines and I can even help you start your own wine business.

NEW SPRING WINES…

I’m so excited, my Wine Club arrived this weekend with some of my favorite white wines in the shipment! I love sipping friendly fruity sweet wines and our two whites released this month are so fresh and lively. First out of the box, Muscat. A favorite of many of my friends who want a sweeter, lighter white.

Muscat is one of our biggest sellers each year and I love it – BUT – If you are a white wine lover and want to try something new -our White Bouquet is a new favorite for me – two of my favorite grapes, Riesling and Gewürztraminer, blended together. This delicious wine is a great example of WineShop at Homes nontraditional thinking. According to our wine maker at Wineshop at Home White Bouquet has subtle aromas of apple and pear with hints of honey and spice. This wine has a weight on the palate not common with white wines. It is intense and mouth filling while still delicate and complex.

Host a wine tasting and try before you buy or Join our wine club and get a 2 or 4 bottle shipment of our wonderful wines every month. If you are too busy to shop for wine, just join the club and it will be delivered to your home once a month. Contact me for shipping locations.

Are you in a Wine Rut?

Red and White Wine

Tasting involves a variety of wines.

Do you find yourself drinking the same varietal of wine over and over? If you are afraid to branch out of your comfort zone I really recommend you give another wine a try. If you normally drink a chardonnay you might want to try a Pinot Grigio – it was the first white I tried besides Chardonnay; recommended by the server on our honeymoon cruise about 20 years ago!  Here are some whites to try – Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc or a Viognier. Whites can be fruity and crisp or sweet with a hint of citrus.  If you are a Cabernet person, stretch your taster with some Zinfandel or a wonderful Pinot Noir. Reds can be big and bold with lots of tannin or rich and smooth, peppery and exciting.

When you’re ready to try the different wines, let your personal wine consultant help you with a tasting and you will have 3 whites and 3 reds to judge for yourself.  Filling your glass and tasting something different may surprise you…you’ll never know until you try.

On the Job – Wine Tasting!

This is a favorite picture of me on the job! Doing a Wine Tasting and showing others how to enjoy drinking a good wine. I’ve always loved socializing with friends over a glass of wine and some snacks of crackers and cheese. Maybe someday you might want to do a fun party for your friends. I travel all over the bay area to bring the wine tasting to you! Not many other jobs where you can drink and get paid for it!!

Why Gluten Free?

Today I am going to address some comments from a few of my blog readers and some of my friends and co-workers. People are asking me why, if it is such a pain to choose the right foods, do I choose to eat GF. Well, for me it is not a choice; it is my ticket to health and a life free of physical pain and discomfort; for some I think it is a fad or maybe some people see it as a way to cut out some carbs but for me it is the way I will eat for the rest of my life.

I haven’t told this story before in print; mostly just my family and friends know the journey I have taken so I will tell it here and maybe someone will recognize him/herself and seek help.

I have probably had a Gluten Intolerance most of my life even though I just discovered it about 9 years ago.  As a young adult I was always very thin. I only gained 12 lbs with my first baby even though I was eating to gain weight; in my other 2 pregnancies I only gained about 16.  I also suffered with digestive problems and horrible headaches most of the time I was raising my family.  As I approached 50 I was recovering from back surgery and gall bladder surgery and just as I got to feeling healthy and energized I began a journey into the realm of fibromyalgia, migraines and extreme weight gain!  For about 2 years I struggled silently and I dragged my self to work and home again wishing for a pain free day or two.

One evening a speaker at an event for my women’s network was a Dr/Clinical Nutritionist from a clinic here in Silicon Valley.  She asked us to fill out a questionnaire and after reviewing them quickly the Dr. spoke individually to 3 of us out of the 30 attendees and offered free consultations based on our answers. She indicated the 3 of us would most likely be helped by their program based on food allergy and intolerance; the most likely culprits according to our profiles were Gluten or Dairy . On the form, I had checked the boxes for dry eyes, light sleeper, fibromyalgia (diagnosed by a doctor), weight gain, IBS, constipation, bloating, dry – itchy skin, migraine headaches, foggy thinking and a very scary esophagus spasm problem that was very much like heart attack symptoms.

I went for my consultation appointment, met with a medical doctor for a physical exam, then spent an hour with the nutritionist who put me on a modified elimination diet that I started the next day.  Within 5 days of eating nothing but poultry, fish, vegetables and fresh fruit I had NO pain, NO spasms and NO headaches! And I lost 15 lbs within 4 weeks. I was so happy to be feeling so much better and losing weight. Then, it was time to add the barley, oats, rye and wheat  Each one I added sent me running for the restroom and the Tylenol….when I had a piece of bread for dinner I got such a headache that I swore I’d never eat wheat flour again.

Since that time I have remained gluten free, 20 lbs lighter and have never had a recurrence of the fibromyalgia or the esophageal spasms – except the one time I decided to “see if I was better” and ate a couple of pieces of Cheesy garlic bread at the Fish Market Restaurant…The spasms woke me that night and my headaches returned all the next day……..I swore NEVER again and that was 5 years ago! Thank goodness Wine and most cheese is gluten Free.

Wine is Gluten Free

pairing wine and chocolate

Red Wine and Chocolate, Yummmm

I guess I need to clarify my Blog a bit. A number of people want to know what kind of wine is Gluten Free and which isn’t?  I made an assumption (not a good one I’m guessing from the comments) that everyone on a GF diet knows that wine is naturally Gluten Free.

So – I want to give tips to other GF persons who might need to find fun foods to pair with wine because the fact that Wine IS gluten free is one of the best things about Wine.

I want to encourage people who are gluten intolerant to be sure to check the cheeses they are pairing with the wine to be sure the cheese is GF too. I remember when I was told by my nutritionist that bleu cheese was suspect and best to stay away from when I told him I love to drink red wine with Bleu or stilton cheese. Most hard cheeses are OK, veined cheeses are not. Goat cheese is GF but most cottage cheese is not…of course, when all else fails, forget the cheese …Dark Chocolate (70% Cacao or more) is always a good choice!!
